My name is Karine; I am a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP or ARNP as you may have heard). But, who am I really? I am a woman like you who found her path and meaning in life. I could have been a Doctor or a Politician to change the world but instead I became a Nurse to touch lives in a different way. The nurse’s role is often underestimated but in the darkest hours of a patient (pain, sorrow, fear of the unknown…), a Nurse often steps in to reassure, educate and ease that uncomfortable feeling. Being a nurse for numerous years taught me a lot, but as I grew in my role, I also noticed a pattern in patient’s behaviors. We, as adult patients mostly seek care when we are in needs. Women especially will take their children to their well visits and regular check-ups, drive their partners to their appointments but would delay their own care until it becomes unbearable. I am sure you know what I am talking about? I am a woman, a wife and a mother and that “superwoman” behavior has been impersonated before. Well until, a more serious problem arises… you come to realize that being a “superwoman” does not mean being invincible. Becoming a NP in women’s health, taught me that change is possible. Today’s trend is shifting, we are now hearing more and more on preventative care than ever before. It does make sense, why wait until the problem becomes out of hand when we could have altered the course of it! NPs are being heard today because our collaboration with the medical team is paramount. It is a needed role in our communities; teaching, educating and promoting healthy lifestyles can only help our “sicker” society. I embraced my career as a NP with this change in mind. When a patient crosses my path, she may hear more what she bargained for but in the hope that she may realize it is in her own interest. So I became a NP with that goal in mind, I also designed that web site for women to realize that change is never too late and is an ongoing quest. I hope this message enlighten some of you as I truly care and hope for a healthier society. Take care of yourselves.
